The Case for Clear Bins (and When to Skip Them)

If you have ever watched an organizing show or scrolled through Instagram, you have probably noticed a pattern: beautiful woven baskets, elegant wooden boxes, glass jars with matching labels. They photograph beautifully and can make a space feel warm, curated, and luxurious.

So why, then, do professional organizers so often reach for... clear plastic bins?

As someone who appreciates beautiful spaces and is mindful of sustainability, I understand the hesitation. Plastic has become almost synonymous with wastefulness. Yet after organizing hundreds of homes, I have learned that the most sustainable organizing solution is often the one that people actually use.

Organization Has to Work First

A storage container has one job: to help you find what you need and put it back when you're done.

Transparent bins excel at both.

When you can immediately see what's inside, your brain doesn't have to remember where things are. There is no lifting lids, opening baskets, or relying on labels. This may seem like a small difference, but it has a surprisingly large impact on whether an organizing system survives beyond the first few weeks.

This is especially true for children, busy families, and many adults living with ADHD or executive functioning challenges. If something is hidden, it can quickly become forgotten.

Visibility reduces the mental effort required to stay organized.

Plastic Isn't Always the Enemy

Many people assume that choosing wood, wicker, or fabric is automatically the environmentally responsible choice. It is not always that simple.

If a beautiful basket system fails because no one remembers what's inside, those baskets often end up replaced. New products are purchased. More waste is created.

A durable plastic bin that lasts for ten or twenty years may actually have a smaller environmental impact than repeatedly buying prettier solutions that don't fit the way your household functions.

The most sustainable product is often the one you never have to replace.

But What About Beauty?

I love a beautiful home as much as anyone.

The good news is that clear plastic bins do not have to make your home look like a warehouse.

In fact, some of the most elegant homes we organize use a thoughtful combination of materials.

Decorative baskets work beautifully in living rooms, entryways, and open shelving where appearance matters more than quick identification.

Clear bins shine inside closets, pantries, utility rooms, storage spaces, and cabinets where function matters most.

The goal is not to choose one material over another. It is to match the storage to how the space is used.

Luxury Isn't About the Material

One of the biggest misconceptions is that luxury comes from expensive storage products.

In reality, luxury comes from ease.

Opening a cabinet and instantly finding what you need.
Knowing exactly where something belongs.
Never buying duplicates because you couldn't find the original.
Feeling calm instead of overwhelmed every time you open a closet.

That feeling has very little to do with whether the container is acrylic, wood, wicker, or fabric.

Before You Buy Anything

One of the biggest mistakes people make is purchasing containers before they have decluttered. Storage should fit what you intentionally choose to keep—not the other way around.

At Clutter Cutter, before recommending storage solutions, we start by sorting and decluttering while learning how you naturally use your space. Only then do we recommend products that support your habits and daily life—starting, whenever possible, with what you already own.

A Few Storage Solutions We Love

There is no single “best” bin—it depends on what you're storing, where it lives, and how you use it.

For clear, functional storage, some of our favorites include BINO, Sorbus, and Vtopmart. They offer simple solutions that let you see what you have and make everyday items easy to access.

When we want something softer or more elevated, we love SortJoy felt bins and Welaxy felt organizers. They bring warmth to a space without sacrificing function.

For woven and natural-looking storage, The Basket Lady and Colonial Mills offer beautiful options that work especially well when the storage itself is visible.

And Horderly Shop is another great resource for thoughtfully selected organizing products.

Our rule of thumb? Use visibility where you need function, and beautiful materials where storage becomes part of the room.
