Preparing for a New Season

Every year around this time, as August slowly gives way to September, I notice my emotions begin to shift. Part of me is ready to welcome the return of routine, while another part wants to hold onto the slower pace of summer just a little longer.
This year feels different.
In a few short weeks, I will be taking my daughter to Scotland as she begins university. For the first time in many years, I am not simply preparing her for a new school year—I am stepping into a season where I cannot quite picture what my own routine will look like. That feels both exciting and a little unsettling.
It made me realize that "back to school" is not really about school. It is about transition. Whether you're sending a child off to kindergarten or college, returning from vacation, or preparing for a busier season at work, this time of year gives us an opportunity to pause and reset.
As organizers, we often talk about creating systems for our homes. But the best systems are really there to support us through life's changing seasons. This month, instead of trying to do everything at once, I encourage you to choose one small routine that will make your days feel a little calmer and a little easier.
Here's to new beginnings—and to finding our rhythm, one small step at a time.
DID YOU KNOW?
Research suggests that habits reduce the mental effort required to make everyday decisions. By turning repeated tasks into routines, our brains conserve energy for the things that require creativity, problem-solving, and focus.
This is especially helpful during times of change, when life already asks us to process more than usual.
QUICK TIPS -
Review your family calendar through the end of the year.
Refresh your entryway so backpacks, keys, shoes, and mail have a designated home.
Empty and reset work bags, purses, and backpacks.
Restock everyday essentials before they become urgent.
Choose one routine to automate, such as bill payments, grocery ordering, or your weekly meal plan.
MUST HAVES
I know I've recommended the 🔗Skylight Calendar before, but the more I use it, the more I love it. It keeps everyone's schedules in one place, lets us share grocery lists, assign chores, and keep track of weekly tasks—all on one easy-to-use display.
Whether you're managing a busy family or simply trying to stay organized, it's a wonderful way to keep everyone on the same page.
WHAT’S HOT
The Second New Year
More and more productivity experts refer to September as the "second New Year." Unlike January, when resolutions often feel overwhelming, September naturally encourages fresh starts with new schedules, new supplies, and renewed energy.
Rather than setting ambitious goals, consider asking:
"What one system would make my days feel easier?"
SPOTLIGHT
Sometimes the best organizing finds are for our own families. 💛
As we prepare for our daughter's move to university, we spent an afternoon treasure hunting at 🔗Other People's Clothes (OPC) in Williamsburg, looking for a few unique pieces for this exciting new chapter. It was a wonderful reminder that organizing, sustainability, and thoughtful shopping often go hand in hand.
As a proud 🔗NAPO NY Business Partner, OPC is a business we love recommending to clients, and it was just as rewarding to support them for a personal shopping trip.
Here's to new adventures, fresh starts, and giving great clothes a second life.
GOOD READ
🔗Four Thousand Weeks: Time Management for Mortals by Oliver Burkeman
As we prepare for a new season, this thought-provoking book offers a refreshing perspective on time. Instead of trying to fit more into every day, Burkeman reminds us that our time is finite—and that perhaps the goal isn't to do more, but to focus on what truly matters.
As routines shift and new chapters begin, it's a wonderful reminder to create a life that feels intentional, not just productive.
CLOSING THOUGHT
